The peony season in the Southern Hemisphere is getting underway with two sourcing origins. South Africa is currently reaching its peak volumes, while the Chilean season is just beginning, with new varieties gradually becoming available through the end of the year.
This year, Daoflowers is offering peonies not only from Patagonia Sun, our established Chilean grower, but also from a new supplier, Andes Flowers. We have also added peonies from South Africa to our assortment. This is particularly relevant for buyers who do not want to wait for certain varieties to become available in Chile, as some popular options are already available from the South African grower.
South Africa: A Short Season Worth Catching
One of the main characteristics of South African peonies is their short seasonal window. Unlike Chile, where peony availability extends over a longer period, the South African season lasts only a few weeks.
This year, the South African peony season falls in weeks 43–45, with peak volumes expected in weeks 43–44. For this reason, it is worth planning purchases in advance rather than waiting until later in the season:
The following varieties are currently available:
- Bowl of Cream
- Mons Jules Elie
- Duchesse de Nemours
- Sarah Bernhardt
- Red Sarah Bernhardt
- Madame Claude Tain
- Nancy Nora
- Old Faithful
- Pillow Talk
- и другие.
Most peonies are offered in a 50 cm stem length. Depending on the variety, each box contains approximately 100–120 stems.
Sarah Bernhardt and other popular varieties deserve particular attention, as they will become available from Chilean growers later in the season. If you need these varieties for upcoming shipments, the South African offer provides an opportunity to purchase them without waiting for the Chilean season to reach that stage.
Lead times are also important. Volumes are limited, and orders are arranged in advance, typically around one week before the flowers leave the farm. Now is a good time to check availability and coordinate your order with a Daoflowers manager.
Chile: Expanding Our Grower Network
The Chilean season traditionally lasts longer than the South African one. The first varieties appear in late October, with additional offers arriving throughout November and December. Exact timing depends on the variety and how the season develops.
This year, Daoflowers is offering peonies from two growers: Patagonia Sun and Andes Flowers. Adding a new grower expands our sourcing options and gives buyers a wider choice of varieties
.
Most offers are for 50–60 cm stems. The number of stems per box depends on the variety and bud size, ranging from 80 to 140 stems.
The first Chilean peony varieties available this season include:
- Coral Charm
- Coral Sunset
- Coral Pink Hawaiian
- Diana Parks
- Lemon Chiffon
- Red Charm
- Sunny Girl
- Christmas Velvet
- Alertie
- Bridal Shower
- Gardenia
- Princess Bride
- Colonel Owen
- Charlies White
- Belgravia
- Mothers Choice
- Bowl of Cream
- Odile
This is the initial assortment, not a list of varieties that will all be available at the same time. As the season progresses, new varieties will enter production while others reach the end of their cutting period.
Sarah Bernhardt and several other popular varieties are expected to become available in Chile later. Buyers who need these varieties sooner should consider the current South African offer.
Throughout the Chilean season, Daoflowers managers will send clients updates on available varieties and expected farm dispatch dates. This will help buyers select the varieties they need in advance and plan their shipments accordingly. Information will be updated as new offers come in from growers. Since volumes are limited for each variety, we recommend confirming your preferred options as soon as you receive the update.
